Mini Get-a-way

After many weekends in a row of "other" obligations ... Jon & I overindulged in a little one night get-a-way to fabulous South Lake Tahoe. I took Friday off work and we got up early and hit the road - arriving just in time to have a little picnic lunch on the beach. We were really anxious and excited to be in Tahoe but we had a few hours before we could check into our hotel ... so we indulged a little bit more and splurged on tattoos! I got my first tattoo way back in 2002 ... a small Scorpio sign on my left foot. I followed that up with a big tattoo just a couple of months later on my lower back. And then in 2004 I got two more tattoos - on the same night - a Polish flag on my right foot and three purple stars just above my Scorpio sign on my left foot. So, this was lucky number 5 for me AND lucky number 1 for Jon. We had been toying with the idea for quite some time ... and originally had planned on getting infinity signs - but instead we each got 1/2 of the yin yang sign. Mine is on my left shoulder blade - and Jon's is on his right. He truly is the yin to my yang and I am a better person because of him. Not long after we got our tattoos we checked into our hotel and then the relaxing really began. We were in walking distance of Heavenly Village (like, right across the street - with an awesome mountain view) along with Stateline and the casinos. We ended up having a couple of beers at Fire & Ice at the Heavenly Village before heading to the casino's for dinner at Hard Rock Cafe and the comedy show at The Improv. After the show (which was not very good - the opening act was great, but the headliner sucked) we gambled for a bit before walking back to our room. We enjoyed the luxury of hotel sleeping with black out curtains and slept in until just after 10am - and then rushed to check out by 11am. We headed down to the marina and had lunch at Riva Grill on the lake before taking to check out some awesome lake views. As we passed back through Tahoe we stopped off at Monte Blue for an Arts & Craft fair - and a little gambling before heading home. We ended up spending the entire afternoon at the casino... seriously, like 4+ hours, before realizing how late it was getting. We hit the road to head back to Sac (and the heat) around 5pm and got back in town just in time to take Jon's sister & her fiance out for dinner for his sister's birthday! We had a great little trip - and it was JUST what we needed!

The "See Food" Diet

Yikes! I guess you could say I'm in quite a slump the past few weeks ... and some where along the line I started a new diet - the "See Food" Diet. Yes, you read that right. It's starting to get out of control but I just can't seem to stop. Have I seen a huge change in the number on the scale? Well, that depends on your definition of "huge". It's a change - none the less - and not in the direction I wish to be going. Have I also been super lazy? Yes, I have. It's hard when you loose your routine to start back up. Really hard. For the most part my eating has not changed that much - I still have my same raw lunch I've been eating for over a year now --- it's just that I've been snacking so much lately! And not on the types of food I should be snacking on. Some how we managed to come home from the grocery store with packaged processed snack foods - something we have not done in a very long time. I am not happy about this BUT I still find myself gravitating towards the pantry for just one more handful of goldfish! One of the worsts part about all of this is that I KNOW how very important routines and structure are to my healthy lifestyle change and to a successful weight management goal. I SO KNOW THIS! Yet, I seem to find myself using every excuse in the book to skip the gym and the snacking. Oh, the snacking. It's got to stop. Not only am I beating myself up on the inside for this behavior but I am also starting to feel bad physically. I'm not comfortable in my own skin like I was just a few short months ago. I don't want to loose sight of my goals - a long and healthy life - and I don't want to feel bloated and gross all the time anymore either. I've got to find my motivation - where ever it may have run away to - and I've got to get back on track. This is more than just about loosing the weight - its about making changes that are for the better - its about having a healthy body at a healthy weight - its about feeling good about myself instead of beating myself up. It's about remembering that I made these changes all those months ago because I want a healthy body - I want a strong heart - I want to be active and I want to be happier. I'm not happy if I am constantly beating myself up and I can't stop beating myself up until I start to make an effort to change. Because, in the end - it's all about change.

What a GREAT weekend

Monday's suck ... there, I said it. The start of the work week. The dreaded pile of work on your desk. The full email in-box. Not wanting the weekend to end. Especially such a good weekend like I just had. The only thing that keep me going through the dreaded work day was knowing that I only have a four day work week this week and on Friday we will be heading up to South Lake Tahoe for a couple of days to relax and spend some quality time with each other - which is very over do. We've been so busy lately - it doesn't seem like we've had any time with each other at all!

The past weekend was jam packed ... just like the past few weeks have been. Friday night we attended The Lion King in downtown Sacramento. We had VIP seat (thanks to Jon's very generous Aunt Pat), only 8 rows from the stage, and the show was absolutely amazing. We started our evening with a yummy dinner and a few drinks at PF Changs before the show. We had such a great time together - enjoy dinner and being out on the town!

Saturday we met up with our friend Zach and his girlfriend and headed out of town to Dublin for Valerie & Steve's wedding! The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was a lot of fun! We've been looking forward to this wedding for a long time - Val & Steve got engaged just a short month after Jon & I did! They are such great people, wonderful friends, and their wedding was such a fun and joyous occasion! It was great to have all the 182'ers (as we call ourselves) in one place again.

Most of the 182'ers and significant others ... getting ready to head to the wedding

182'ers reunited once again!!!

Bright and early Sunday morning we woke up and headed back home to get ready for a Father's Day BBQ with my dad and step-mom. The weather was perfect and we had a wonderful afternoon. I ended my weekend with my newest obsession ... Twilight. We watched the movie a couple of weeks ago and I was left feeling like I "missed" something. So, I went out and bought the book. I've hardly been able to put it down since! I can't wait to watch the movie again after I finish the book!

Penne Pasta with Pea Pesto

I made this recipe a few weeks ago ... and said I was going to blog about it ... and then totally forgot about posting the recipe until I made it again tonight!

Penne Pasta with Pea Pesto
adapted from Rachel Ray

1 pound penne pasta
2 10 ounce bags of frozen peas
1 shallot
1/2 cup of dry white wine (or chicken stock)
minced garlic
1 cup of plain greek yogurt (or ricotta cheese)
fresh basil
EVOO (AKA extra virgin olive oil)

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the penne pasta till al dente. While the pasta is cooking, bring another pot of water to a boil and cook 1 bag of frozen peas for 2 minutes. Drain the peas and put them into a food processor with 1 cup of plain greek yogurt (or ricotta cheese) and the fresh basil. Meanwhile, heat the EVOO in a large saucepan and add the shallots and garlic - cook for a couple of minutes then add 1/2 cup of dry white wine (or chicken stock) and reduce heat and simmer for a couple of more minutes, then add the 2nd bag of frozen peas and cook until defrosted. Drain the pasta and add to the wine, pea & shallots. Add in the pea puree from the food processor and toss the pasta until coated and heat throughly. Serve & enjoy!

It's a pretty simple 30 minute meal BUT it takes a lot of dishes! Peas are hands down my favorite veggie so I love making this! And I love finding new uses for greek yogurt :)

I'm still here

I've been a bad blogger lately. All I've been posting are Project 365 photos and Weekly Meal Plans ... boring! I'm in a sort of slum with trying to come up with interesting posts and also trying to find time in between all my vegging out and watching TV. Seriously. How lame. I've been a total couch potato for a while now and I have not even found the motivation to go the gym in weeks. Weeks. That is sad. Hopefully I can get back into the groove of things soon. In the meantime ... I didn't post a Weekly Meal Plan this week ... I just didn't find the time. We had a busy weekend ... my mom & step-dad were in town to help us out around our yard and to help our with our very successful yard sale we had last Saturday. Jon is on summer vacation now so he's been home very day when I get home so we've just been hanging out and trying to catch up on our DVR (our current obsession are Grey's Anatomy - only 4 more to go till the finale - and Private Practice - only three of those left too). And, of course, So You Think You Can Dance started a couple of weeks ago. It's my favorite reality/competition TV show ... and last night was the first Top 20 episode with performances. Love it!!! Anyways ... I just posted three weeks worth of Project 365 photos so make sure to check those out. I hope to try to come up with some interesting posts for my few readers (you guys still around) and in the mean time feel free to leave me some comments with any questions you might have for me (I've seen a few readers do this) or suggestions for what you'd like me post more about. I've got a ton of recipes I want to share so I hope to get those posted in the next couple of weeks ... so keep checking back. And, I have started writing the Wedding Recaps over on my wedding blog 03.21.09 so check back for those soon too!

Anything not boxed up for the yard sale has ended up in our office. I am not looking forward to going through all these boxes in the next few weeks. Boo.

A whole year!

This week marks the one year anniversary of our healthy lifestyle change we made last summer! I have currently lost 17 lbs (I was up to over 20 lbs at one point, but I've been yo-yo'ing around my plateau for a while now) and Jon has almost 50 lbs!

Our lifestyle change was a combination of wanting to lose weight, get in shape, and get healthy. It was never that we ate absolutely horrible or anything like that ... it was just more that we didn't have the right balance and we would over eat and gorge on food items that really should be eaten in moderation. We started out with making small changes like switching from sourdough bread to whole wheat bread. We also started measuring our portions and counting our points along with the Weight Watchers points system. Following Weight Watchers we gained useful tips and tools to aid us in our journey - tools that help keep us on track still, a year later, even though we no longer subscribe to Weight Watchers.

Another big change we made was cutting out/reducing empty calorie consumption ... soda, sports drinks, excessive alcohol, mindless snacking, unhealthy snack options, etc. We also continued to be active and aimed to workout/run as much as possible given our ever hectic schedules and busy lifestyle. We ate at home more. We cooked a lot. We measured our portions and planned ahead if we were going to be eating out. We increased our water consumption.

After a year - I feel good about the progress we've made and the changes we've stuck to. It's not always easy ... and sometimes it can be discouraging ... but I not it was worth it. I feel better. My clothes fit better. My asthma is more under control. I have more energy. I have more stamina. I'm in better shape that I was a year ago, or probably even 5 years ago. Are the changes going to continue to stick? Heck yes they are. Sometimes we get off course ... but we always manage to find our way back because we know that the changes we've made and the healthier lifestyle we've chosen is what we want for the long haul. We know it won't always be easy and the rewards will not always feel worth it but they will be!

Here's to many more years of a healthier, happier, and more active lifestyle!
