Elk Grove Fun Run 5k {Feb 2010} Race Recap

On Sunday we participated in the the first in the four part series of Fun Run 5k’s held by our local running store, The Running Zone, for 2010.  We ran just over 4 miles on Saturday and I’m still trying to take it easy since my shins are still bothersome so I walked the race with my sister-in-law who is recovery from a knee injured she sustained in December playing soccer. 

We were able to get in a couple of jogs and finished in 43:42 while Jon tried to, and successfully, set a new PR for himself, 21:12!  Luckily we live pretty close by to the running store/race location so we were able to walk there and get in some extra mileage for the day!  After the race they held a raffle where they raffled off a pair of New Balance shoes, Asics socks, bags, head bands and some New Balance technical shirts ~ we didn’t win, but we are hopeful that one of these time we will … then we headed home. 

Participants who come out and do all 4 races  in the same year receive an All Series Participant plaque at the end of the year ~ that’s my goal! 

The races are fun and its a great way to spend a weekend morning with other fellow racers/runners in our area and support our local running store … plus you can’t beat the price ~ only $5!!!

Ash Wednesday Ramblings

Two years ago, I gave up soda for Lent.  Well, actually I had forgotten to give anything up for Lent that year and so I calculated how long it had been since I had a soda and decided that since it had been a couple of weeks AND I was wanting to reduce the amount of soda I was drinking anyways, I went with it and gave it up for Lent.  And, actually, I have never had it since.  I use to drink A LOT of soda so it was a BIG challenge but I’m glad I did it.  I only MISS it every once and a while and when I’m craving it then I run to my local grocery store and pick up a bottle of lemon lime flavored water and it HITS THE SPOT every time.  Speaking of which, I think I’d like a glass right now :)  Yum-o!

Okkkkkkay.  Moving right along with my morning ramblings …

This year for Lent I decided to give up chocolate AND candy.  Specifically CHOCOLATE CANDY since I seem to have been eating it SO MUCH lately {like the last 3-4 months} that its practically a FOOD GROUP and STAPLE of my every day diet.  I am quite serious.  It’s so ridiculous.  I have a HUGE sweet tooth but I don’t actually crave chocolate/candy unless I’ve had one piece.  Then its all down hill for me.  One piece leads to two which leads to three which … you get the idea.  It’s like as soon as I taste it then I loose all my self control and decide that nothing else matters except my next piece of candy.  I do so well with other aspects of my healthy eating lifestyle that I think its time for me to rein in on my sweet tooth and make this change.  Chocolate and candy should be a TREAT not an everyday SPLURGE.  I hope that during the next 40 days I can learn to control my sweet tooth instead of letting it control ME. 

Today is Day One.  Also known as Ash Wednesday.  I’m declaring my intentions here on the blog so I can hold myself accountable and report my results.

No fractures, just SEVERE shin splints

Well, I finally went to the doctor for my shin pain.  The doctor was 100% confident that I do not have any stress fractures but she has recommended that I attend physical therapy for my shin splints in the hopes that at physical therapy they will be able to give me the tools/direction I need to get rid of them or prevent them all together.  Now, I wait for the referral to go through.  The doctor said to anticipate hearing from them in about a week. 

Funny thing is, I woke up on the day of my doctor appt with NO PAIN.  None what so ever.  I felt like I could run 100 miles and be just fine.  But, I still went to the doctor.  And, today, I am still PAIN FREE so I am going to RUN.  Hi, my name is Jesse and its been 7 days since my last run.  We’ll see how it goes, but I’m optimistic that hopefully my body is past torturing me and that my shins are ready to let me RUN.


In other news, I also spent a HUGE junk of time on the phone today.  Yep, I finally got around to changing my name on ALL MY ACCOUNTS.  OMG.  Not only did it take me forever to finally do this {we’ve almost been married for 1 yea} it took FOREVER to call all the different places and actually get my name changed.  I must have spent about 3 hours total working on this, and 2 hours and 45 minutes of that time was ON HOLD waiting for a customer service rep with this company or that company.  BUT, it’s done.  One more thing to cross off my 2010 Goals list! 

I also attempted to start our 2009 taxes online with Turbo Tax.  That took FOREVER also so I eventually ended up saving and quitting so I could start making my phone calls to change my name.  In between calls and while waiting on hold I was DOING LAUNDRY.  So far, since 6am this morning, I have completed 8 loads of laundry.  I have at least two more to go and then all our LAUNDRY will be clean, folded, and put away.  I really could get use to this staying at home and being a housewife deal … now, if only I could win the lottery to pay off our bills so I could fulfill my ultimate dream.  Until then, I better finish up my TO DO LIST so that I can enjoy my evening with my hubs and mentally prepare to go back to work tomorrow.  Ugh.  Work.  I NEED to figure out what I want to do now that I’m grown up so I can find a job that I ACTUALLY ENJOY and that does not make me MISERABLE on a DAILY basis.

My recent running, or lack thereof … Jan 25-Feb 9

What’s up with that 1.99?  I guess I must have hit the button on the Garmin too soon.  Hubs got home early today {well, not early, but earlier than usual} and we decided to take good advantage of the break in rain and run outside … but my shins didn’t like that idea.  Boo shins, boo.  We walked.  A lot.

You’ll notice no cool down listed above … that’s because after we were done with the craptastic run, I hopped on my bike and rode while hubs ran another 2.0 miles.  Then we did a cool down.

Today my shins decide to cooperate and let me get in a really good run, with an average pace of under 12 minutes!  This is what I wish my runs were always like.  Actually, I wish there were 100% pain free – but until then, I’d settled for lots of more runs like tonight's.  I iced my shins after the run {which I really need to get back into the habit of doing more often, instead of just after long runs}, and did a ton of stretching {like always} and hoping that tomorrow’s planned 5 miler is also a success!

This run actually started out really well.  I took some Advil as soon as  I got off work to help ward off the shin pains, and it actually worked for about the first mile.  Then it all started going down hill.  By the last mile, I was walking only.  Tomorrow will be a rest day then we’ve got 10 planned for Saturday.  We’ll see about that …

Let’s Play Catch Up

I can’t believe it’s already the 2nd week of February.  Time flies, doesn’t it?  I’ve got a lot I want to share, let’s do this bullet point style!  All of the following ramblings are in no particular order :)

  • My work schedule has been changed, so now I go in at 8am and work till 4:30pm.  This is not exactly my ideal schedule and I’m not very happy about the change.  That’s really all I’m going to say about that for now.
  • My running injury is escalating.  What I once thought were shin splints have become much, much worse.  The ½ marathon is only 5 weeks away.  Some days are worse than others – I spent one whole week on “rest” from running, then did a nice and easy 5 miler last Saturday, followed by an ice bath.  Then I did a nice and easy 2 mile walk on Sunday followed by lots of stretching and resting during the Super Bowl.  Yesterday I ran just under 3 miles, the first 1.5 were fine but the last half of the run was bad.  I followed up last nights craptastic run with lots of stretching and another ice bath.  The coldest one yet.
  • We hosted a small get together for the Super Bowl at our house this past Sunday.  The guests included my dad & stepmom, Jon’s dad, and Jon’s sister & brother-in-law.  Jon made his “award winning” Chili ~ his grandma’s recipe!  We enjoyed the company, the game, and the food. 
  • The night before the Big Game we took my dad & stepmom {who spent the whole weekend with us} to see Avatar at the IMAX in downtown Sacramento .  This was my first IMAX experience and let me just tell you … I can’t wait to go back.  The movie was really, really good and the 3D graphics were amazing!  I was so engrossed in the whole experience that the 3 hour movie sped by!
  • Last Monday, the 1st of February, my dad celebrated his 60th birthday.  The Saturday before his big milestone birthday his wife threw him a small surprise dinner party in Chico.  Jon & I drove up for the dinner and met up with my brother & his family and one of my stepmom’s daughters.  My dad was quite surprised!  It was a fun evening.  The next day I spent the afternoon shopping with my mom where I got engrossed in the sewing section of Wal-mart and purchased my first pattern.  I’m just a few more supplies away from starting my first sewing project! 
  • A couple of Friday’s ago we had our first “date night”.  Monthly Date Nights are one of my 2010 goals.  We decided to switch off planning each month, so I planned January’s Date Night.  I had originally planned for us to go bowling at the local bowling alley but when we got there we were told there was a 1 hour and 45 minute wait for a lane so we nixed that idea and grabbed a pitcher of beer, some quarters, and played pool in the bowling alley bar instead.  It had been a long time since I played pool, and we had a lot fun.  It’s too bad we didn’t know we were going to be playing pool in advance otherwise we could have brought Jon’s pool stick {yep, he has his very own pool stick}.  There is always next time!  Jon is playing February’s Date Night … I know what we will be doing, we just need to pick a day so he can call the make the arrangements!  In March we will get to celebrate a third Date Night of 2010, the anniversary of when we started dating {5 years ago} … AND our first wedding anniversary!  March is going to be a very exciting month for us!
  • Also, in January we had a couple of fun long runs {before my injury decided to get worse} including a scheduled 8 miler that became 9 and a scheduled 9 miler that became 10.  The 8 that was 9 was on a cool, foggy morning along the American River Bike Trail and the 9 that was 10 was on a sunny morning in the Greenhaven/Pocket area along the Sacramento River and Riverside Blvd.   Both were great runs with little pain.  In January we ran along three different rivers:  The Feather River in my hometown Oroville, the American River, and the Sacramento River.  I miss the long runs already. 
  • I’m in the process of moving all my Project 365 photos to their own blog.  It’s taking me a long time.  I’m still current on my daily photo taking, but I just haven’t posted any in a really long time.  I hope to have them all posted/moved over to the new blog by the completion of the project {03.21.10}.
  • We don’t have any big plans for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.  It will be our first married Valentine’s Day ~ we’ve rented Casablanca from Netflix and I figure we will probably make dinner at home and watch movies and relax {we both the next day off work} and drink bottle of champagne with some chocolate.  We are giving up chocolate/candy for Lent this year {which is right after Valentine’s Day ~ doesn’t that work out just perfectly?}.
  • On February 1st I started a 28 day de-clutter project via Org Junkie.  So far it’s going pretty good.  I picked our home office since it was in desperate need of some de-cluttering and organizing.  I made a lot of progress last night but I still have a long way to go!  I’ve got boxes and boxes of papers to go through, shred or file ~ I haven’t filed anything since sometime in mid 2008, I’ve just been letting it pile up in numerous boxes.  Yikes!  I’ve definitely got my work cut out for me.  I do plan to share the before and after photos and write about the experience once I’m done.  I hope 28 days is going to be enough! 

Whew!  I think that’s everything.  I’ll be posting my recent runs in a separate post and that will include a couple of week’s worth of miles.  I’m getting behind very quickly in my goal for 1000+++ miles this year … but it is still very early and if I can get over this injury then I can get back on track.  I made a call to my doctor today so hopefully I’ll know soon about my future and how long I’ll have to be out for my injury.  Think happy thoughts and send good vibes my way for a quick recovery so I can get back out there.

Such a simple word … but right now, its the farthest thing from simple for me.  I don’t know why I woke up one day in 2007 and decided  that I wanted to be a runner.  All I know is that I latched on to that idea and finally had the motivation and will power to get moving.  It’s been a very long and rough road.  It’s had the highest highs and the lowest lows.  I’ve struggled and conquered and overcome.  And today as I sit here and write this all I really want to do is lace up my shoes, head out the door and pound the pavement.  But, I can’t. 

Running is my stress reliever.  It’s my hobby.  It’s something I can do alone and share with my husband at the same time.  It’s rewarding and emotional and challenging.  And yet, here I sit typing away instead of piling on my miles. 

Back in October I was fitted for running shoes because we {the husband and myself} decided we were just crazy enough to run a half marathon and that if we were going to get serious then we needed serious shoes.  At that point, I had just finished up The Couch to 5K Plan and was enjoying getting back into shape and running again.  I was eager and excited to start increasing my distance and stamina and endurance.  We set out with a 22 week training plan leading up to the half marathon we chose to run and started out slow, increasing our mileage at a very slow rate.  It was thrilling to feel my body changing with the challenge and adjusting to the physical activity.  But, soon after, my left shin began to give me a lot of pain.  Shin splints.  If you’ve never had them, feel extremely lucky.  They can range in intensity from bothersome to down right unbearable at times {mostly when running}.  I knew right away, the first day I had pain, that my shin had decided that it wanted to be one more obstacle for me to overcome.  I stretched more, and iced after each run, and cross trained as often as possible.  My mileage was still pretty low and we were still increasing at a snail pace.   I was determined not to let a little shin splint get me down or discourage me. 

As the weeks progressed the pain came and went.  Occasionally I would have some irritating pain while on a run, and occasionally I wouldn’t.  I stuck to my guns, pushed through the annoyance, and forged on.  I purchases compression sleeves for my legs, I continued to ice, and I was determined that eventually my body would adjust to the activity and my shin would start to feel better.  After all, I had been through this before and that is exactly what my body did.  I knew it was only a matter of time and I would feel good again. 

Just a couple of weeks ago, while we happened to be at our local running store picking up some Gu for the husband, I decided to chat up the sales person about my shins and the issues I’ve been having.  I should probably let you know that (a) I have not been to the doctor because I’m stubborn and I don’t want to pay the co-pay and I was convinced they were simply shin splints I was suffering from and (b) I’ve been talking to a lot of people and reading a lot about shin splints and running injuries and stress fractures and at no point was I experiencing any of the signs of a stress fracture that I had read about.  The sales person suggested I go home, pick up my running shoes and come back to see her.  So, that’s exactly what I did.  About two hours later, we determined that I was in the wrong shoe and my four month of Asics were exchanged for a brand new pair of Mizuno’s.  During the time I was in the store, we talked about the shins a lot {what the pain felt like, when it was the worst, how often I experienced it, where I ran, how fast I ran, how often I ran, how far I ran, how long I’ve been running, how I treat the pain, my history with shin splints} and when I left I felt confident that, in time, my body would start to adjust to the right types of shoes for me and the pain would be a thing of the past. 

That was two weeks ago.  The new shoes feel great.  I could actually feel my body readjusting and realigning when I was running, and even walking, in them.  But the shin pain continued … and worsened.  For the first time since the pain began, it actually worsened.  Obviously my body needs to adjust to the new shoes, but I don’t think the pain should be getting worse.  I’m at a point in my training where I feel confident that I can take a few days off, let my body rest and recover, and then reassess where I’m at and determine if I will be able to forge on at this time.  As of today, I’ve been experiencing round-the-clock pain in my left leg and a minor muscle soreness in my right left since last Thursday.  It’s worse when I first get up in the morning or after I’ve been sitting or immobile for a while.  All shoes hurt.  All walking hurts. 

My heart is heavy and I’m disappointed in myself.  I feel like I’ve let myself down and that I’ve failed.  I’m angry and upset and confused and hurt. 

All I want to do is the one thing I can’t … run. 

And until I can again, I wait. 

I just hope the waiting doesn’t take very long.
