Three Things Thursday

I’ve got just enough time for a quick post … so I figured Three Things Thursday was appropriate!

1.  I’ve got a pinched nerve.  How awesome is that?  A co-worker of mine gave me copies of all the Insanity DVD’s and at some point during one of the workouts I must have done something to pinch the nerve in my lower back/upper glut area.  At first I just thought I was super sore in my hamstring from the insane amount of squats and lunges that were apart of one of the workouts but one the soreness went away and the muscle got tighter then I started to get numbness and tingles in my whole leg {think the kind of numbness & tingles you get when your leg falls asleep --- that pretty much how I feel all the time} I realized that something else must be wrong.  Then I started getting almost unbearable lower back pain.  Last night we attended an Injury Prevention Clinic that our running store was holding and the professional sports medicine / chiropractor doctor that was there was very helpful and I learned a lot about my current injury and about proper running form.  The doctor told me to use a tennis ball to work out the tenderness from the pinch nerve {the tenderness is right in my upper glut area near my lower back and hurts like hell when rollling a tennis ball over it} and so now I’m carrying a tennis ball in my purse to work with me today.  He also told me to get up from my desk every 10 minutes to walk around.  Hopefully that will help my boring work days to go by quicker.  THANKFULLY he did not tell me to stop running.  He actually said that movement WILL help.  So, Advil for the horrible lower back pain, rub the tennis ball on the tender spots to work them out, and movement.  Got it.  Wish me luck.  I am quickly becoming the queen of injuries!

2.  I have not really mentioned it much on the blog {yet} but the hubs is going to be 30 next month!  To celebrate I’m giving him 30 presents in 30 days.  This started back on July 14th.  Today is day 16.  It’s been a lot of fun!  Tomorrow, for day 17, is a Surprise Date Night that includes his present and I’m very excited.  After his b-day I do plan to share the details for the 30 in 30.  Trust me, you’ll want to do this for someone you love too.  It’s sooo fun to plan :)

3.  I’ve finally finished a few sewing projects lately and I am constantly looking at blogs/websites for more inspiration & ideas.  I can’t wait to share what I’ve finished so far.  However, I have a ton of other projects I still want to do … like my wedding scrapbook and my race bib scrapbook.  I’m always busy, busy, busy …

Alzheimer’s Aid Society 5k

We participated in the Alzheimer’s Aid Society 5k this past Saturday.  It has quickly become one of my favorite races.  This was the 3rd annual event and even though attendance is growing each year its still a relatively small race.  The course, while claiming to be fast, is not only beautifully woven through the Fab 40’s of East Sac, but also offers a bit of a challenge with some rolling hills and an uphill dash to the finish line which claims to be the highest point in Sacramento at the top of the hill at the East Lawn Memorial Park. 

I went into this race hoping for a PR since I have been working on speed training all summer long at the track.  However, I had been having some hamstring issues all week.  Once we arrived at East Lawn I kept my eyes peeled for the Mayor as we have seen him at this race the previous two years.  The first year, 2008, he ran along side us for about 20 seconds and the second year, 2009, I was right behind him at the start and was able to pace him for the first mile.  I was hoping to run with him again this year but he was not there. 

I started out way too fast and knew by the first mile that I was not going to be able to maintain that pace.  By the half way point my hamstring was screaming.  I had to stop and walk for a minute just before the two mile marker and again a few times during the second mile and while climbing the hill to the finish.  I had written my current PR on my hand in hopes of crushing it at this race but that time has passed by before I reached the third mile marker.  I still pushed through till the end and finished with a really great time that I am proud of AND a course PR.

Sounds like a pretty easy week to me!  I feel like I have a million and one things to do this week since I spent all day Sunday in bed.  Its going to be a busy week!

Doggy Dash 2010

Back in early June we participated in the SSPCA Doggy Dash with Lucy


There were a lot of dogs out there along with fun events for the dogs and lots of vendors!  We got there early so we registered and picked up our shirts and race numbers then walked around to check out some of the vendors.  Then we watched the start of the 5k before we lined up for the  2k walk {that ended up only being about 1 mile}.  After the walk was over we checked out the rest of the vendors before we headed home.  It was a fun event and we are so happy we took Lucy to participate.  I think she will enjoy this event for many years to come!

*We’ve moved away from “Pizza Friday” for a while since its too hot to want to turn the oven on after work on Friday evenings AND sometimes we want PASTA to fuel up for our Saturday morning group long runs (or for this week to fuel up for a 5k race on Saturday) during half marathon training :)

Where does the time go?

I can hardly believe its already almost the middle of July!  So far this summer has been jammed packed with activities, travels, and fun-in-the-sun good times.  I’ve slacked at blogging a lot of things … I just posted my meal plan for this week {back dated, of course} and thankfully I took the time to pre-write next weeks meal plan and already set it up to post in the morning. 

Sometimes I really don’t know where the time goes.  My mom came and stayed with me during the Fourth of July weekend while the hubs was out of town at a music festival ~ and I didn’t go anywhere near the computer while she was here.  We shopped, drank, ate out, got pedicures, sewed, watched movies, laid in the sun … and just enjoyed each others company.  It was the first time we have had a “girls weekend” just the two of us in probably at least 10 years!  It was WONDERFUL. 

We started half marathon training this weekend with our running group.  Our next half marathon with be the Urban Cow {formerly known as the Cowtown} the first weekend in October.  So life is about to be crazy busy, again.  I’m looking forward to it. 

I treat my blog first and foremost as a type of journal for myself, so I plan to do some catching up during the next week or two {hopefully not longer} of some of our recent activities / outings / races / etc.  Until then … I’m off to the movies with my sister-in-law {we are going to see Eclipse at Imax for $5 each … gotta love the teacher perks}.  I’ll be back … and around.  I’ve got over 400 items on my Google Read to catch up on.  I think its going to be a busy week.  Not to mention I’m working on a super secret project right now … that I can start to reveal in the upcoming weeks.  It’s awesome!

Speed work without the track

We skipped the track workout on Tuesday night and had “date night” instead since the hubs was about to leave town for a few days.  So, after work last night I decided to get in some speed training around the neighborhood.

1/4 mile fartlek’s with 1/4 mile recovery jog

Whew!  It was very warm out but I managed to get in a decent workout.  My legs felt light and overall this speed work was not too bad.  I started to get tired during the last set but I still managed to finish strong! 

And when I got back to my house I picked up Lucy and we did another 1 mile walk also.  She is getting so much better on the leash but last night she was a little slow, probably due to the heat.
