I’ve got muscles where?!?

I recently purchased a couple of Jillian Michael’s DVD’s to add to my growing collection of at-home workout options since we quit our gym.

Making cross training a priority has been tough so a little variety in my workouts is just what I needed.

jillian yoga

On Monday I did Jillian Michael’s Yoga Meltdown.  I never knew yoga could be so hard.  Of course, with Jillian on the front, I should have realized that it was going to be tough workout.  I did realize that its going to take my body a long time to be as strong and flexible as it will need to be to finish this workout with stopping for a break!  Yoga Meltdown is a great workout … and I wasn’t too sore the next day {only in the shoulder blades … must have been from the planks!}  I’m excited to make this DVD a part of my weekly workouts!

jillian fat

On Wednesday I did Jillian Michael’s Banish Fat Boost Metabolism workout.  Let me just list out a few things about this workout:

  • Blurpies
  • 180’s
  • High Knees
  • Cross Country
  • Scissor Kicks
  • Standing Mountain Climber
  • Moguls

Those were the absolutely hardest moves I have ever even attempted.  I thought 30 Day Shred was hard … that’s like a walk in the park compared to this DVD.  I don’t even sweat that much when I run.  And this morning, I am sore in places I didn’t even know muscle existed {deep in the abs, to the point where it hurts to actually speak}.  This is what I call a hard core workout and I definitely was cursing Jillian when it was over!

At the end of the Banish Fat Boost Metabolism workout Jillian stated … “be empowered in every aspect of your life …” and I found that to be very motivational and inspirational ~ even if I was laying on the floor cursing her at the time :)

My first track workout … in the rain!

We are experiencing some late storms here in our neck of the woods and even though its only a few days away from the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend, its raining.  And its cold.  And windy.  Not exactly the most ideal circumstances for my first track workout with the running group.

Since it was raining there were only 8 of us and we all were doing our our thing.  Jon & I started with a mile warm up then split up to do a 4x400 workout.  After the first 400 I started walking and didn’t think I was going to do another one because it was hard!  But by the time I had walked 100m I was ready to run again so I did another 400 followed by another 100m walk and repeated two more times.  After completing 4x400 I was pretty tired and my legs felt like jelly so I decided that I didn’t want to push it too hard on my first track workout, especially in the cold rain, and we finished up with a half mile cool down before heading home to get dried off and warmed up.

My 400’s started pretty strong then started to get a little bit slower each time … so much for starting slow and finishing strong!  I always start too fast and fade quickly!

All in all … I really liked running at the track and I’m looking forward to next week ~ as long as its not raining again!

Total track mileage = 2.76
1.01 warm-up:  10:37
4x400’s, 100 walk in between {untimed}
1 – 2:09
2 – 2:10
3 – 2:21
4 – 2:28
0.50 cool down {1 lap walking & 1 lap jogging} = 7:54

A 5’er with the running group

On Saturday I was able to run an out & back 5 miler with the running/walking group from our local running store, The Running Zone.  Jon trained with this group after the Shamrock’n Half Marathon, that we ran together, and for the Parkway Half Marathon that he ran alone.

Luckily the store is only about a mile from our house so we rode our bikes over there for a nice warm-up before heading out for the group run.  I’ve only been averaging around 3 miles per run so I was a little skeptic about doing 5, or 6 as the rest of the group did, and decided I would just see how I felt once we got to the 2 mile marker {where we would have to turn around to get a 4 mile out & back} and since I was feeling pretty good, just a little tired, we decided to go for 5 and turned around at the 2.5 mile marker.  That was when most of the rest of group lapped us after making it to the 3 mile marker {for a 6’er out & back} just as we were approaching the 2.5 marker.

I was starting to feel real sluggish around the 3 mile mark and around the 4 mile mark the muscles behind my left knee started to tighten up so I did a lot more walking but was able to finish in just over 1 hour.

All in all it was a good run and I was excited to get out there and run with the husband again and with the running group.  The tightness behind my left knee was troublesome for the rest of Saturday and all day Sunday but was gone by Monday morning … which means I’m ready for my first track workout tonight!

5.00 / 1:03:03 / 12:36 average

  • 1 – 11:27
  • 2 – 12:04
  • 3 – 13:18
  • 4 – 12:48
  • 5 – 13:25

Meal Plan Monday {May 24}

With the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend we’ve got a short meal plan this week.  Last week was long and I’m glad to have this Monday as a fresh start for a new week … even though I always dread Monday’s.

Lucy got her final puppy vaccination last week and was finally able to leave the house/yard and we’ve been going for a walk every day since!  We also have been to a couple of parks and to visit with a few other dogs!  She had an exciting weekend.  She is getting so big!  She is a slow walker but she is still just a pup and scared so I am hopeful that in time she’ll pick up the pace.  The kitties have adjusted well to the puppy being in the house ~ they all seem to coexist quite well and Layla {the younger kitty} even likes to play just a little bit with the puppy which Lucy loves!

This is Jon’s last week of instruction then he will start working for his dad for the summer.  My stress has been very high lately due to the uncertain salary cuts he will be taking next year ~ but I just have to remind myself, daily, that I am very thankful that we both have jobs.  Sometimes that is a lot easier said than done.  And due to all that stress I’ve had quite a few migraines lately.  I’m focusing on getting back on track with healthy eating and exercising this week with the hope that it will help alleviate some of my stress.

This weeks {short} menu …

Monday ~ Jon @ graduation, I’m having salad

Taco Tuesday ~ Shredded Chicken Tacos

Wednesday ~ Spaghetti with semi-homemade marinara sauce

Thursday ~ leftover spaghetti

Elk Grove Fun Run 5k {May 2010} Race Recap

On Saturday we participated in the second race of the four part series of Fun Run 5k’s held by our local running store, The Running Zone, for 2010.  The past few weeks I have been VERY lazy so I was a bit worrisome about the outcome of the race.  My only goal was to finish strong.

The weather was perfect for race morning and we walked to the race from our house again and enjoyed a nice warm up jog too.  The course is flat and fast and I was able to finish in 34:43, placing 4th in my age group!  Jon finished in 20:55, a new PR for him, and placing him in 4th for his age group too.  Jon actually holds a spot of honor on the wall at The Running Zone because of his race times, he is currently in third place overall for his age group!  He may have even moved up with his new PR, but we will have to go to the store to check.

After the race they held another raffle BUT we still have not won.

I really enjoy these Fun Run races put on by the store even more now that we are getting to know the store owners better since Jon did a training group with them for the Parkway Half Marathon that he completed on May 1st.  I especially enjoy supporting our local running store … and the $5 entry fee is awesome :)

34:43 ~ Jesse ~ 4th in my age group

20:55 ~ Jon ~ 4th in his age group

Date Night #3 & #4

You can read about Date Night #1 and #2 here.

One of my 2010 Goals is to have a Date Night at least once a month with my husband!

Date Night #3 ~ take your pick
In March we celebrated our first wedding anniversary and we spent 3 glorious days of our vacation in the Napa Valley wine tasting for our anniversary trip.  Since we had so much going on we didn’t actually plan a Date Night in March.

You can read about our other adventures in March by clicking on the links below:

Date Night #4 ~ April 24, 2010
Date Night #4 was a double date with Jon’s sister and brother-in-law.  We went to Monster Mini Golf, an indoor glow in the dark mini golf course.  We had a lot of fun.  Afterwards we went out for a few beers at a local brewpub.

Everything at Monster Mini Golf glowed in the dark.  The monsters, the floor, the course, the golf balls, the murals on the walls.  It was really neat.  Some of the monsters moved and made monster noises too.  There was also a DJ playing “monster” music {think Monster Mash}.  It was a pretty fun date night and CHEAP.  Only $7.50 per person for 18 holes of golf, $15 per couple.

Anniversary Trip to Napa ~ Day Four {April 1st}

You can read about Day One of our Anniversary Trip to Napa here, Day Two here, and Day Three here.

The morning of day four we woke up, got ready, packed up everything and checked out of our hotel.  After a quick stop at Jamba Juice we headed through Sonoma County over to Hwy 101 and the Golden Gate Bridge.  We stopped off and walked up this little hill right above the bridge to take photos and enjoy the view.  We had the most amazing weather.  It was so clear out, no fog or smog, and we could see the Bay Bridge and the Oakland Hills.  I lived in Berkeley for four years right after high school and I had never been to this spot to enjoy the view of the Golden Gate Bridge.  It was breathtaking!

After taking lots of photos and getting super wind blown we walked back down to the car and drove across the Golden Gate and headed over to Hwy 1 and drive down the coast for a while.  We didn’t have any specific destination in mind, we just wanted to stop off wherever we felt and spend some time at the ocean.  Our first stop was in Pacifica

I’m telling you, the weather was beautiful.  Much nicer than the three days of rain and clouds we had in Napa.  It was a perfect day for a drive along the California Coast on Hwy 1.

I have no idea of the names of the cities or beaches we passed through or stopped at.  We turned around somewhere near Half Moon Bay and headed on Hwy 92 to the San Mateo Bridge to head home.  Here is a random selection of photos I took at all the beaches we stopped at.

We had such an amazing time and I’m already looking forward to planning our next vacation {once our savings account recovers from the outrageous prices in Napa}.

We spent the rest of this vacation / spring break at home working around our house and planting our garden

I’m so lucky to be married to my best friend.  We always have the greatest time whether we are on vacation or at home together.  I’m looking forward to spending lots of anniversary celebrations with my amazing husband!
