Reflections on Wk3:
~Tuesday’s workout with our running group was the best run I had have in … weeks.  And then Wednesday & Thursday were both pretty awful.  And then … Saturday’s long run was GREAT.  I’m telling you, these shins have a mind of their own!  I picked up some new inserts {I use Super Feet inserts per the suggestion of the physical therapist I saw earlier this year} on Friday and I think they really helped.
~Next week is the Urban Cow Half marathon and I’m expecting a PR {my last half was 2:53:41} and I’m hopeful to finish at or below 2:45! 
~I ended up with an extra rest day this week {Friday} but that’s okay.  I need it :)

I love stop lights …

… on long runs because it means I get to “rest” without it counting against my “time”!  Haha.

Today we conquered 16 miles!  Not only was it a new distance record but it was a GREAT run overall.

First, the splits:

The first five miles were amazing.  I was feeling great {as in, NO SHIN PAIN} and I was impressed that I was able to keep each mile under 12 minutes. 

Mile 5 through 8 were pretty great too.  We hit a hill {read: overpass} at the tail end of mile 5 and beginning of mile 6 that was a little rough going up but felt great going down!  At mile 8 {the halfway point} I was surprised to find that I was still feeling soooo great {still NO shin pain, only mild tightness in my hip flexor area, but NO major aches or pains}.

Mile 8, 9, and 10 were still good, but around the end of mile 10 I was really starting to get fatigued.  My legs were starting to get heavy and it was getting late and HOT {its in the 90’s here today … I guess Mother Nature didn’t get the memo that it’s FALL now}.  We hit that “hill” again during mile 10. 

Mile 11 was rough and I started to do some walking.  Same with mile 12.  Even though I was getting tired and really wanted to walk the rest of the way, I was able to finish up 13.1 in 2:36:11 {which is a new best time for a half marathon distance for me} and that makes me very hopeful for the Urban Cow Half next weekend.  After that I really started to fall apart. 

During mile 13-16 I was having an internal debate about rather I really think I am going to be able to do this marathon {CIM}.  I did a lot of walking those last three miles.  A lot.  Its reflected in my splits.  But even though those last couple of miles were rough {to say the least} it was still a GREAT run overall.  And we finished right on goal for a 5:30 marathon. 

As for recovery ~ I’m feeling great.  I did a lot of stretching after the run {before heading back out to run some errands} and now that we are back home I plan to ice my shins {which, by the way, feeling AMAZING ~ I guess all that praying for the pain to go away worked for today} and do some more stretching and I will definitely be spending some time with my foam roller and The Stick tonight. 

This 16 miler is in the bag.  Up next, the Urban Cow Half next weekend … and an 18 miler the weekend after that!  Look out 20+’ers … I’m coming for you!

Martha Stewart Fun Run 5k

Our local running store, The Running Zone, was contacted and asked to participate in the On The Move With Martha campaign.  Apparently The Martha Stewart Show was moving to the Hallmark channel and running clubs & groups were contacted to hold fun runs as part of the marketing campaign.  The participants each received a tech shirt, an apron, a wooden spoon and a sweat towel.  We each were requested to wear our shirts & aprons during the fun run/walk so that photos could be taken & submitted for the On the Move With Martha campaign.  Before the fun run started with had a moment of silence in remembrance of the events of 9-11. 

The course wove through the neighborhood around the running store and through one of the local high schools before looping back around to the store.  It was all familiar territory since it was in the same area where we usually have some of our training runs also.

We had a lot of fun running around Elk Grove in our aprons!  The run was a little rough due to shin splints but it ended up being a great warm-up before our long run since the fun run was on the same day as our scheduled 13 mile long run for our Urban Cow Half marathon training group.  So we did the 3.3 mile loop of the fun run, dropped off our Martha “gear” and picked up our Camelpak’s and continued on an out and back course for another 10+ miles. 

Also, during this fun run and the long run that followed I wore a Marathon Pace bracelet on my wrist that I downloaded and printed from  the Marathon Guide website.  The CIM has a 6 hour cut off time so I want to start wearing the pace bracelet on my long runs to make sure I am training at the pace I need to be at to finish the CIM before the 6 hour limit.  I’m aiming for a 5:30 marathon so that I have a little cushion of time.  We ended up doing a total of 14.05 miles on this day.  We finished in 3:01:04 which was about 5 minutes over the 5:30 marathon pace time.  Not too bad for my first paced long run. 

And, just for fun, lets take a look at my mile splits for this day … all 14 of them!  I had an average pace of 12:53 overall.  You’ll notice that I had some good miles, and some bad ones.  As well as lots of walking in mile 10-14.

What an epic fail :(

Thoughts about Wk2:
~This was a rather rough week, not in running {because as you can see, there wasn’t much running} but in life.  Sometimes life throws you some hurdles and you either need to learn to jump over them or they are going to knock you down.  Instead of getting knocked down, I ended up taking a few more rest days than planned and I’ll just call this a “cut back” week.  After all, the Urban Cow Half is only two weeks away!
~Regarding the 1200 repeats on Tuesday:  I was uber sore from the 14 miler & 5k race of the following weekend and my legs felt like lead.  I also was having some pretty severe shin splints.  I’ve decided to chalk that day up to a “bad” running day. 
~Regarding the lack of a long run on Sunday:  after traveling on Saturday to an out of town wedding and eating way too much good food all day long and staying up way too late then driving back home and taking care of some weekly chores we just didn’t have the energy to hit the pavement.  Like I said, it was a rough week.

Thoughts for Wk2:
We are attending a wedding on Saturday so we had to move our long run to Sunday but it will most likely be in the late afternoon / early evening so I hope we don’t loose the motivation to get out the door and get the miles in because while it might still be early in CIM training, we’ve only got a couple of weeks left to the Urban Cow Half.  Also, thankfully there is only one soccer game this week {today} so I made that one of our rest days {which I totally needed after 14 on Saturday and a 5k race on Sunday}.  Looking ahead over the next few weeks makes me concerned about mid-week long runs during soccer season … but I’m confident that we will find a way to make it work because, in the words of fellow blogger Amanda at Run To The Finish ~~~ “you can do it if you choose to do it and want to do it”!

I’m loving that its football season ~ and “fall” is coming up soon!  I love fall!  I can’t wait to start making soups :)

We spent Sunday hanging around the house, after our 5k race, watching football with my dad who came down to visit us for the day/night.  It was a wonderful way to another GREAT weekend :)

Thoughts about Wk1:
~After finishing my running streak of 25 days I opted to take three days off because my shins really need it.  The last few days of the running streak I had severe shin pain and I discussed it with my running coaches.  Thankfully they suggested I come into The Running Zone so that they, personally, could watch me walk & run and see if maybe I was in too supportive of a shoe.  Lo and behold, I was.  They did an even exchange for the Brooks shoes I have been running in since mid-July and I got a new pair of Mizuno’s.  I wore the Mizuno’s at the 5k today and felt good.  My legs are uber sore from the 14 miler yesterday but the shin pain was significantly less and the new shoes felt like I was running on clouds :)

2 more than planned

With my running streak. coming to an end, I took a “rest” day on Wednesday {as planned in my Wk1 CIM training} and then I decided to two take two more unplanned rest days also. 

I wanted to do 5 miles on Thursday but Lucy need to go to the vet after work for a vaccine so she can go to doggy day care so by the time we got home it was 7pm.  5 miles takes me around 1 hour.  I just didn’t have the energy for it and instead of going out there to do even a shorter run I decided my shins, and very tired legs, would benefit more from an additional day of rest and some foam rolling, stretching and sticking {is that a word?  we got a “stick” last week and LOVE it --- is works great on the calves, hamstrings & shins}. 

Now its Friday.  I planned on an easy 3 miler today but we overslept so morning running was out of the question and we are heading to the football game tonight so I’m taking another rest day.  I’m thinking I’m going to have very fresh, and happy, legs for the 13 planned miles on Saturday and the 5k race on Sunday.  And I think I like it.  My shins are definitely feeling much better and I know they have appreciated the rest very much.  I think I’m better off with missing the 8 miles planned over the past two days and taking the rest so that I can make it through to the Urban Cow Half in three weeks and through the next 12 weeks of CIM training and the marathon. 

Look out fresh legs, we’ve got a looooong run in the morning :)

Black Bean & Corn Skillet

This recipe comes together quickly for an easy weeknight meal and has just a few simple ingredients but the possibilities could be endless!  I usually either serve it over rice or in tortillas for a main dish but it could also be a side dish or used as burrito filling with some rice or as enchilada filling.  The leftovers are great for lunch the next day with some tortilla chips ~ which I bet means this would be a good nacho topping too!

Black Bean & Corn Skillet

Ingredients
1/2 medium onion, chopped
EVOO
1 can black beans, drained & rinsed
1 cup frozen corn or 1 can corn, drained & rinsed
1 sm can of diced green chilies
1/2 sm can of enchilada sauce {freeze the rest to use next time you make this recipe}
1 tbsp taco seasoning

Directions
1.  Heat some EVOO in a large skillet over medium heat, add the onion and sauté for a few minutes until translucent.
2.  Add the black beans, corn & green chilies and sauté for a few more minutes then add the enchilada sauce and turn down the heat to low and continue to sauté until heated thoroughly.
3.  Serve either over rice or in tortillas or any which way you like :)

25 days and 88+ miles

A goal I gave myself a couple of weeks ago when I posted about being In a rut was to attempt to run 21+ days in a row.

I made it 25 days before taking my first rest day. I covered 88.39 miles. And I suffered from varying degrees of shin splints {from minor to severe}.

I completed 6 days with mileage over 5 miles. I ran twice one day {Aug 30th}. I did two races, a 5 miler & a fun run 5k --- both of which I placed 2nd in my age group!

I decided to run a full marathon and started marathon training on day 24.

But, most of all? I enjoyed it. And on my first rest day --- I missed it.

After the marathon I think I’ll try again. Until then, I am going to keep on running but I’ll be taking rest days and sticking to my CIM and Urban Cow Half training plans.

Elk Grove Fun Run #3 {Sept 4, 2010}

On Sunday we ran the 3rd Elk Grove Fun Run for 2010 that is put on by our local running store, The Running Zone

I was very tired, I was and am still fighting a cold, my shins were hurting, and my legs were heaving since I had ran 23 days in a row.  I planned to take the race easy and then we were going to run another 9 after the raffle {which they do at the end of every fun run}.  It was a bit chilly when we arrived at the race start just after 7:30am but it warmed up quick!  By the time the race started at 8am it was warmer and I was HOT by the time I finished.  Jon’s goal for this race was a new PR {his current PR is 20:55 AND he wanted to place 1st in his age group since he is in a new age group after turning 30 last month}. 

Jon was a superstar and finished 8th overall of 100 finishers, winning 1st place in his “new” age group but no PR.  I started slow and finished strong and actually ended up placing 2nd in my age group again {I got 2nd in my age group last month at the five miler race, too}. 

After the race we hung out with some of our fellow running group members and then helped our running coach with the raffle.  We’ve now been to 4 of these “fun run” races put on by The Running Zone and we finally BOTH won raffle items.  I got a nice New Balance tech shirt and Jon got some socks.  Once the raffle was over we grabbed our Camelpak’s to head out for a 9 mile run but quickly realized that it just was not going to happen so we turned around and headed home.

9 Things

Fun Blog Activity #2

Day Two: Nine things about yourself.

1)  When I was two years old I was bit by an Australian Shepherd dog in the back of a pickup truck at a little gas station in my hometown.  The dog’s owner was a friend of my dad’s.  I had to have reconstructive surgery on my right eye to repair the lower tear duct.  I don’t remember any of it.

2) On my wedding day I suffered from a minor migraine most of the day.  In the middle of the night my new husband got up and went down the hall to get me ice because by the time we went to bed the migraine was very severe.  When I woke up the next day it was gone.  Sudden, varying intensity, and unexplainable – that sums up most of my migraines.

3) I’m not a morning person, but I’m not a night person either.  However, the older I get the more I am becoming a morning person.  I like to get up early to get the day started.  Right now I am enjoying getting up around 5ish and having 4 hours before I have to go to work.  I get all sorts of things done … laundry, dishes, bill paying, playing with the puppy, making the bed, blogging.  I also enjoy getting up early on the weekends sometimes to get tasks done of my ever growing to-do list and to run early to beat the heat.  I guess I am more of a morning person than I thought.

4)  I like to drink my coffee either BLACK or ICED with non-fat milk and a little sugar. 

5)  I stopped using paper towels & napkins at home at the beginning of this year as one of my 2010 Goals.  We use cloth napkins and I made some towels to use as paper towels replacements out of organic unbleached cotton material.  We use rags for cleaning.

6)  When I was a little girl I preferred my hair to be long, and more often than not it was permed also, but now I prefer it to be short {and I have for the past 8-9 years}.  I grew my hair out for our wedding and wore it in an up do and then after the wedding I cut it all off and donated it.  It’s currently getting pretty long again but it’s a good length to wear it in a pony tail or bun for running so I may wait to cut it again until after the Urban Cow Half in October and CIM in December.

7)  I’m going to run my 2nd half marathon the first weekend in October and my first marathon the first weekend in December!

8)  Currently I’ve ran 24 days in a row as a personal challenge I gave myself to do a 21+ day running streak!  Check out my Running Streak page.

Meal Plan Monday {Sept 6}

I’m so excited its a short work week since I seem to be losing against the summer cold I’ve been fighting for over a week.  I made today’s long run very tiresome and I’ve been exhausted ever since.  Now that I’ve got this posted I’m going to go cuddle up on the couch with the puppy and finish up the Grey’s Anatomy & Private Practice episodes from last season {since a new season starts in just a few short weeks} then I hope to enjoy some TV watching in bed later also since we finally got the flat screen in our bedroom hung and I won’t have to worry about neck pain in bed anymore!  I’m so excited.  I wish I had another day off to lay in bed and enjoy it :)

Monday ~ 9-12 miles {Urban Cow Half training long run}
Tuesday ~ 3-4 miles {speed workout with our half marathon training group}
Wednesday ~ rest
Thursday ~ 5 miles
Friday ~ 3 miles
Saturday ~ 13.1 miles {long run with our half marathon training group}
Sunday ~ 3.1 miles {Sac Valley Aids 5k race}

Total estimated planned miles for Wk1 = 36.2 – 40.2
*Our regularly scheduled Saturday long run from last week got changed to tomorrow because (1) we needed fresh legs for a 5k race today {where the hubs won his age group and finished 8th overall} and (2) we have Monday off from work so why not?!?

The next few weeks will be unique because we are also in the last few weeks of half marathon training for the Urban Cow Half {Oct 3rd}!

Vinecrusher 5 Miler {August 22nd ~ 2010}

We participated in the Vinecrusher 5 & 10 miler on August 22, 2010.  This race is held in Elk Grove at McConnell Estates Vineyard.  The course weaves along the dirt access roads around the vineyard and was mostly flat with some areas of rough road and even some deep gravel that they placed in areas that the road needed filling.  I forgot my camera but the scenery was beautiful and it was a perfect day for a race.  The weather was cool and the sun was shining. 

This race is held by The Running Zone {whom we are training with for the Urban Cow Half}.  Some of the members of our running group were are the race also.  It was fun event with a Health & Fitness Expo afterwards AND free wine tasting from the winery.  What a great way to end a race.

We ran the 5 mile race and it was rough.  The course was not always forgiving and often times you had to choose between running in the deep gravel or in the weeds.  Also, there were a lot of holes in the road so you were constantly weaving around them to avoid falling or twisting an ankle.  This did not go well with the shins.  I felt like my pace was pretty slow overall but when I look back at my stats it really wasn’t.  The course was long {0.18} and we finished with an official “gun” time of 64:59 {there was no chip timing at this race} and the gun time was only 4 seconds longer than my Garmin time.

This was my first 5 mile race and I won 2nd in my age group {20-29} and received a medal!  I was so excited.  There were less than 200 people at this race but I was still stoked to win an age group award!  I have never even ever considered that this would be something I could do because who wins age group awards with an average pace of 12:32?!?  I DO :)

5 years, a birthday, and BIG news

Today is the 5 year anniversary of when I finally quit smoking and I think I can finally say I don’t crave them anymore. 

Last year, on this date, I posted a super cute photo of Lucky the kitty on his 11th birthday …and today he turns 12!

Here he is, this morning, laying in the window!  He doesn’t like the flash very much.  You’d think after 12 years of living with me he would be use to it!  Happy Birthday Lucky the Kitty!!!

BIG NEWS

We are going to run a full marathon!!!

Me and the husband will be running the California International Marathon on December 5th from Folsom to Sacramento!  We are going to be following a the intermediate 13 week program from the CIM website with some modifications because we still also have 4 weeks of half marathon training left for the Urban Cow Half on October 3rd.  The rest of this year is going to be EPIC.  Marathon training starts MONDAY SEPTEMBER 6th!!!!!!!!!!!!
