Race Recap: Run to Feed the Hungry {11.25.10}

CIMG5352

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again --- the Run to Feed the Hungry is my favorite race!  This was our 4th year in a row participating and our first time running the 10k.  It was a GREAT race, as it always is.  The weather was not as perfect as it was last year and I even heard that it was the coldest Thanksgiving morning in the history of this race!  I really enjoyed running the 10k --- it was nice to see more of East Sac / Downtown and it wasn’t as congested as the 5k is {due to the large crowds & large number of walkers}.  We got to the CSUS campus early again, like last year, and sat in the warm car until about a half hour before the 10k race time.  Jon’s sister & her friend {they joined us last year too} were doing the 5k so after getting out of the car, doing some warm up dynamic stretching and making a pit stop at the port-o-potties, we left them to line up in the 10k corral with the other timed runners.  Once the race started it took a while to get warmed up and three of my toes on my right foot were numb from the cold until about mile 2.

  • Mile 1 = 11:25
  • Mile 2 = 11":18
  • Mile 3 = 11:48
  • Mile 4 = 12:05
  • Mile 5 = 12:02
  • Mile 6 = 12:19
  • 0.26 = 2:48

Garmin Results = 6.26 / 1:13:48 / 11:47 avg pace

Official Results = 6.2 / 1:13:50

CIMG5354
I felt pretty good for the whole race.  My right calf was tight for a while and after mile 5ish my hips really started to get tight.  I didn’t start taking walking breaks until after mile 2 and I managed to maintain a 9:1 run/walk ratio for the remainder of the race {one of my hopeful goals for the upcoming CIM also}.  I started slow, thanks to the crowds, and managed to finish strong --- and faster than I thought I would.  I really enjoyed the 10k, and this race overall, and I’m already looking forward to next years!  Plus, since it was my first 10k, I got an instant PR.  Woohoo :)

AND, we got tech shirts this year!  Awesome :)

Race Recap: Elk Grove Fun Run 5k #4 {11.06.10}

On Saturday the 6th of November we participated in the final fun run for the 2010 series of Elk Grove Fun Run put on by The Running Zone.  We had a lot of fun participating in all 4 races this year and we were excited to get our All-Series Participant Awards after this race.  We left our house about an hour before the race start time in order to get in a few extra miles.  We had ran 20 epic miles the week before and I was looking forward to cutting back on this particular Saturday.  We ended up getting in 3.5 miles before the race and arriving to the race location about 10 minutes before the race started.  I had been sticking with my 4:1 run/walk ratio for a few weeks but decided to run the entire 1st mile of the 5k and see how I felt.  I had no intentions of racing for a PR or really racing at all, I was just there to run a fun run and participate to get my All-Series Participant award.  The first mile went good.  I felt good.  I took a walk break and then started my 4:1 walk/run and kept a pretty good pace throughout the entire 5k.

  • 3.11 / 35:12 / 11:19
    • 11:11
    • 11:25
    • 11:28
    • 1:06

My official time was 35:15 and I finished 6th in my age division {I entered a new age division on my last birthday and this was my first race in that division}.

Jon’s official time was 21:12 and he finished 8th overall & 1st in his age division!

After the race we received our All-Series Participant Awards then headed home.  We are already looking forward to the 2011 Fun Run Series!

Here is a photo of our All-Series Participant Awards --- they are marble paper weights
Proudly to be displayed in our home office near our race medals :)

6 Things

I almost totally forgot about this little Blog Activity I started back in September!  Here is the Fun Blog Activity #5.

Day Five:  Six things you wish you’d never done

Before I list these six things I want to say that I don’t regret any of the choices I’ve made in my life because I truly believe that I would not be where I am today or who I am today if anything was different.  So, these are the things I would change if it wouldn’t change my destiny or affect the outcome of my life today.

1)  Picking Business as my major

2)  Staying in Berkeley for so long after I knew in my heart that it wasn’t going to work

3)  Starting smoking

4)  Not participating in more sports growing up

5)  Quitting my job at the bank before having a new job lined up because of the debt we accrued during that time of unemployment

6)  Moving away from my family

Meal Plan Monday {Nov 22}

Well, I guess you could say I’ve been a little disconnected for a while now.  I had every intention of posting this on Monday {the 22nd} but got busy watching Lucy on the webcam at camp before we left for a road trip to Sunnyvale to visit family.  And between spending my boring work days staring at my computer screen searching the internet for something to occupy my “down time” {including reading my very full Google reader with over 400 posts --- but I can’t post or leave comments on blogs} and painting/redecorating our living room/entryway/dining room I’ve just been away from the computer & internet while at home.  I’ve got a couple of CIM {less than two weeks to The Big Marathon Day} training posts to catch up on … BUT first I’ve got to get back to painting.  I’m determined to get the majority of the work done today {Tuesday} so I can clean, clean, clean my house tomorrow {Wednesday} before my mom arrives on Thursday for Thanksgiving!  I better get back to work …

This weeks menu …

Monday ~ road trip to Sunnyvale to visit family, dinner out with dad & step-mom on the way home

Tuesday ~ Spaghetti with semi-homemade marinara sauce

Wednesday ~ leftover spaghetti

Thursday ~ Thanksgiving {its my favorite holiday, yum!}

  • Turkey
  • Mashed Potatoes & Gravy
  • Green Bean Casserole {I’ll be using homemade cream of chicken soup instead of condensed canned soup and FRESH green beans}
  • Stuffing
  • Rolls {store bought this year}
  • Macaroni Salad {my mom is making this}
  • Apple Pie {homemade --- better add that to Wednesday’s to-do list along with cleaning and a trip to the DMV, again}

Friday ~ Dinner at Jon’s dad’s house with some of his family and my mom & step-dad

Saturday ~ leftovers

Sunday ~ Turkey Enchilada’s {I hope there is enough leftover turkey from Thanksgiving otherwise I will use ground turkey}

Hopefully the painting & redecorating will be done this week and then I can start to catch up on some posts I want to get up!  I hope everyone has a happy & thankful Thanksgiving!

Learning as I go …

Yesterday I received my new camera in the mail {finally}.  With help from both my mom & step-dad and dad & step-mom and the cash settlement I received from the insurance agency of the lady who rear-ended me in September, I purchased a Canon Rebel T1i for my 30th birthday!

I have no idea what I’m doing and I’ll be learning as I go but I wanted to share a few of the photos I took on the first day.  I’m still reading the manual and I’ve found tons of resources on the ‘net so I’m excited to keep playing with it and learn how to use it out of auto mode.

IMG_0091This is Lucky, our oldest kitty.  I’ve been taking his photo for 12 years and he doesn’t much like it but I still do it.

 IMG_0006This is Layla.  She was the easiest to photograph as she just sat there staring at the camera.

 IMG_0080And, of course, here is Lucy
I took the most photos of her since the cats got bored and ran away eventually and Miss Lucy is pretty much stuck like glue to my side at all times when its just the two of us at home {like it was last night}.

So far, I’m absolutely in love with the new camera and I can’t wait to continue to learn how to use it.

Do you have any tips or resources to share with me while I’m learning how to use my new dslr?

Apple Hill {2010}

A couple of weeks ago, on Halloween Day, we took a ride up to Apple Hill and enjoyed some wine tasting, yummy apple foods & drinks & sweets, and beautiful scenery. I don’t think we could have picked a better day to make the trip --- the weather was perfect & the crowds were not that bad. The only thing was that we were dragging a little because we had run 20 miles the day before.

Our first stop of the day was at Boeger Winery where we enjoyed some wine tasting and the amazing view of the vineyard.

CIMG5213CIMG5211 CIMG5212

Then we went over to Lava Cap Winery for some more wine tasting. We ended up purchasing wine at both wineries --- and at Lava Cap we also got some fudge that was made with one of the wines we tasted/bought.

CIMG5214CIMG5217

Our next stop was Jack Russell Brewery where we sampled a few beers and had lunch. Like I mentioned, the weather was beautiful so it was nice to sit outside and enjoy a beer!

CIMG5218

After the brewery we went to Denver Dan’s and enjoyed an amazing apple crisp.

CIMG5222CIMG5223

Then we went to Rainbow Orchards for apple donuts and apple cider.

CIMG5231CIMG5233 CIMG5234

Our last stop of the day was at High Hill Ranch & Fudge Factory Farm where we parked in the apple orchard, bought fudge & a caramel apple and walked around checking out all the craft vendors.

CIMG5241CIMG5248 CIMG5243CIMG5255CIMG5249

We had a great time and really enjoyed ourselves & I can’t wait to go back sometime {especially after I get my new dslr camera!}

*We are going to aim to run 22 miles for our long run this week before starting to taper for the BIG DAY but after last weeks epic fail of a non-record-breaking-less-than-9-miles week I don’t know how well 22 miles is going to go.  That 20 miler was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but now I know what to mentally prepare for and the next time I’m faced with that kind of distance --- I’ll be ready!

This is what I call a FAIL week and I completely lost all my motivation to get out the door and pound the pavement this week.  I knew it was going to be a cut back week after the 20 miler the previous week but I didn’t realize that meant I wasn’t going to want to run at all.  Not good when your training for a marathon …

Lacking Motivation

After last weeks 20 miler I am seriously lacking the motivation to get back out there.  I’ve used every excuse in the book this week and managed to miss all my workouts.  I definitely am feeling burned out on training.  This week was a cut back week anyways and we only plan to do 10 miles this Saturday {split up between a 3 mile warm up, a 5k, and a 4 mile out and back after the 5k and a cool down back home}.

But not only my running is suffering this week.  I’m unmotivated in all aspects of my life.  Work.  House cleaning.  Blogging.  Crafting.  Everything.  My job is boring.  We are so slow that I can go in at 9am & finish all my work by 11:30 … which leaves way too many hours sitting in my cubicle bored but looking like I have work to do so I don’t get sent home because my bank account doesn’t like that very much.  Luckily we did a deep cleaning of the house a couple of weeks ago so its not really that bad and there is some cleaning that needs to be done but I just don’t feel like doing it.  I’ve got a ton of topics I could be posting about on The Blog but I just haven’t.  I’ve got way too many craft projects in the works right now that I don’t even know where to start.  And running.  Its been 6 days since that epic 20 miler and I have yet to lace up my running shoes again.  On the up side, I have been foam rolling and doing light stretching & yoga a few days this week.  I’m just ready for marathon training to be over and for The Big Race day to be here already.

I’m sure I’ll get over this little running slump and get back out the door. Actually I know I will because tomorrow is the 4th Elk Grove Fun Run for 2010 and we’ll be receiving our “all series” participant plaques so we’ll definitely be there to participate.  I think I’m just ready to get back to shorter distances that require less time and less of a commitment.  Don’t get me wrong --- I definitely do not regret signing up for or training for the CIM but I’m just burned out.  We’ve been in “training” mode since July.  That’s a long time.  I’m just ready to get back to running for the sport, and fun, of it.

I’m also excited because Amanda over at Run To The Finish is hosting the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge again this year.  Go check out her informational post.  I participated last year and it definitely helped keep me on track during the holiday season :)

On Sunday night I got caught up and never posted this weeks meal plan.  On Monday evening after dinner I got on the computer to post it and ended up getting distracted by searching for all things related to using a DSLR since I ordered myself one on Monday morning {more to come on that when I get it in a week or so}.  Last night I completely forgot that the meal plan was still not posted.  So here it is, Wednesday morning, and I’m finally sharing my meal plan for this week.'
