Race Recap: Race for the Cure 5k {05.07.11}

Back on Saturday May 7th I participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5k along with my husband and my sister-in-law.  This was the 4th year in a row that me and my husband participated in this race {and my 5th time overall, since I also did the 1 mile walk in 2005}.  Last year we walked {me, the husband, the sis-in-law & the mother-in-law}.  After seeing so many participants dressed up and decked out in all types of get-ups, including tutu’s, my sis-in-law and I decided we wanted to make our own tutu’s to wear in this years race.  So, last summer we got together and got busy making tutu’s out of tulle.  They turned out super cute and we got to debut them at this years Race for the Cure!

The race starts & finishes at Cal Expo in Sacramento.  There are 1000’s of participants {over 25,000+ this year, the biggest year yet!} and parking can be a bit of a pain, especially with traffic backing up on the freeway.  Once we made it in the gates of Cal Expo, me & the sis-in-law jumped out of the car to pick up our packets while the husband parked.  It was also a good opportunity for me to get in some warm-up walking from packet pickup, to the car, then to the start of the race.

After we got our packets, and made it back out to the car, we were able to spend some time getting our tutu’s on and taking a few photos.

We made it over to the start of the race with plenty of time to stretch, and take more photos!!!

The race had different start times for runners and walkers, which is a good thing because its crowded.  We discussed my running plan for the race {3x8:2 and then run to the finish} and before we knew it, it was time to start.  Like any big race, it takes a few minutes to get over the starting mat of a large and crowded race, but once we started moving we were able to get into a comfort pace.

We were able to keep a steady pace throughout the entire race, even when walking.

  • 3x8:2 {11:30, 10:42, 10:40} + run to the finish {10:30}

Official Results 3.10 / 36:07
Garmin Results 3.16 / 36:08 / 11:25 avg pace

This race has a huge expo afterwards so after grabbing some post-race snacks, and taking some more photos we headed into the expo to check out the vendors and free giveaways {and take more photos – its what you do when you’re walking around in a tutu!!!}

Once we got home, I didn’t want Lucy to feel left out … so she took a photo with the tutu too!!!

I love participating in this race! It holds a special place in my heart as both of Jon’s grandmas battled breast cancer, as well as one of my cousins {all were/are survivors; Jon’s grandmothers passed away due to other illnesses}.
