Long Run: Wk4 {Fall Race Training}

Seriously, today’s run sucked.  I’ve been dealing with weird achiness in my left shin – a weird pain that I’ve never felt before – and it was the worst today during my long run.  Thankfully this week was a step back week and we “only” had 8 miles scheduled.  Since I’ve been having this ache for a few days, I decided to use some KT Tape on my shin for the first time today.  I have no idea if it helped or not.  And part of it started to come off around mile 6 and I had to roll it down and tuck it under another section.  I’m not opposed to trying it again.  But I don’t know why it started to come off …

We decided to run straight from home today, something we haven’t done in a while.  And I forgot to check my training plan before I left to see what my pace was suppose to be today {HMP+20 @ 11:58} so I aimed for HMP {11:38} or better.

Warm-up:  1.0 / 17:07

The first two miles of this run were the worst.  I keep thinking I was going to have to stop and walk home.  And before even making it through the first mile we had to cross the street to a gas station so I could use the potty. Trust me when I say this is getting old.  I even talked to my doctor about it last week and she ran a urine test but everything came back normal.  I haven’t been drinking any coffee pre-run and only about 4oz or less of water before leaving the house.  And, today I used the restroom 4 times before we left.  I countedThis is ridiculous.  Anyways.  At the beginning of the third mile I decided to walk 1 minute and continued to walk the first minute of every mile thereafter.  I ate three Clif Shot Bloks {Tropical Punch flavor} at 40min.  And I took several un-timed breaks in the shade through the run.

Mile 1 – 11:38
Mile 2 – 11:36
Mile 3 – 11:35
Mile 4 – 11:25

The husband ran ahead during mile three and again during mile 8 to have a couple of pick up miles at his pace.  I told him we could run separate at our own paces but he said he wanted to run with me.  Isn’t he the best?!?  I was feeling really defeated the first half of this run and was wishing I was alone to sulk but during the second half of the run I was feeling better and glad he was there.

Shortly after the turn around point we saw a snake on the trail!  Ahhhhhh.  I’m so scared of snakes!  I screamed and jumped --- much like last timeThen I made the husband go back and take a picture :)

Ekkkkk!  Its scary for me to just look at that photo.  Seriously, it gives me the major heebie-jeebies.  The husband took a second photo also so I could share how “BIG” this snake was --- he used his foot as reference.

Yes, I know its not that big.  But still.  It scared the crap out of me.  Boo snakes!

Mile 5 – 11:21
Mile 6 – 11:30
Mile 7 – 11:22
Mile 8 – 9:45

Don’t let my mile 8 time fool you.  I stopped half way through to rest in the cool shade and finished up after my heart rate had dropped back down and I had caught my breath.  I took lots of breaks today.  Which, in my book, is better than quitting --- which is what I wanted to do.

Overall:  8.0 / 1:30:14 / 11:16 avg
{Goal was HMP+20 @ 11: 58}

This 8 mile run was less than two minutes slower than my 8 mile tempo run on Thursday.

Cool down:  1.02 / 18:37

Once we got back home we dropped off our Camelpak’s and took Lucy for a walk.  I ate a package of Welch’s Fruit Snacks while we walked the puppy.  And after the walk I did lots of stretching, ate some food, and took an ice bath.

Walk with Lucy:  1.0 / 18:56

Just over 11 miles total for the day.

I have no idea what's up with my left shin.  Its so different than anything else I’ve experienced or felt in all the time that I’ve dealt this shin splints and my shin issues.  Hopefully whatever the heck is going on stops soon.

I have unhappy feelings in my stomach just looking at those two pictures of the snake. Go away snake and stay away!
