Tempo Run: Wk9 {Fall Race Training} – Racing with Babes 2nd Annual Rock Your Socks Virtual 5k/10k Race

My tempo run this week coincided with the 2nd Annual Rock Your Socks Virtual 5k/10k race hosted by TMB at Racing With Babes.  This was my first time participating in a virtual race.  I only had 3 tempo miles on the schedule for today so I knew participating in the 5k was a perfect option for me.  I set my alarm for 5am, got my gear ready the night before and planned out my route.

I decided to stay close to home and ran a few loops around my neighborhood.  There was very little traffic and thankfully no cars around whenever I was crossing streets to slow me down or make me stop.  Unfortunately I did not get up at 5am and ended up sleeping until 6:30.  When I did finally get up I ate half a bagel thin and then laid back down in my warm bed to let it digest for a while.  Next thing I knew I had fallen back asleep!  I woke back up around 8:15 and started getting ready.  Since it had been so long since I had eaten I decided to munch on a package of Welch’s Fruit Snacks before heading out the door.  Thankfully the weather was cool and breezy this morning especially since I didn’t get started until almost 9am!

Warm-up:  0.65 / 10:01

Goal = 3 miles 5k @ mid tempo pace 10:35

  • Mile 1 – 10:32
  • Mile 2 – 10:22
  • Mile 3 – 9:49
  • Last 0.10 – 0:56 {9:11 pace}

Overall = 3.10 / 31:41 / 10:12 avg

Running a mid-10 pace is getting easier and easier.  About half way through the last mile I decided to pick up the pace, I was “racing” after all, so I did fartlek intervals to the finish.  I’m very happy with today’s run :)

I didn’t plan it but my finish ended up being in this cross walk.  Perfect.  It was like crossing a real finish line :)

I didn’t have any fun socks to wear so I sported my bright yellow Zensah calf sleeves after my ice bath.

Thank you to TMB for hosting this virtual race.  It was definitely motivation to get me out the door this morning after sleeping in and then falling back asleep after breakfast.  Good luck to the rest of the virtual race participants
