Monthly Recap: October 2011

For several months I’ve said “I have never felt stronger as a runner than I do right now”.  Except by the end of October, I didn’t feel this way anymore.

Even though October was another GREAT month with high mileage and a half marathon PR, by the end of the month the little leg injury that has been haunting me since early September transformed into a full blown running injury that left me limping at the end of the race and skipping runs and resting by the beginning of November.  Thankfully I am under the care of a sports doc who is a runner and “gets it” and I’m receiving ART treatments once a week.  I’ve been assigned some strengthening exercises to help my hips/glutes and I’ve been advised that I can return to regular activity/running as soon as I’m not having any pain and to STOP if the pain returns or if an activity causes any pain.

Yet, despite all that --- October is my FAVORITE month of the year!  It’s my birthday month!!!

At the beginning of the month I ran the Urban Cow Half Marathon and shaved 28 minutes off my previous half marathon PR finishing in 2:14:16!  The next day I headed up to my mom’s house to spend a few days with her and I was able to run on the Dam for a change.  We spent an indulgent afternoon at Apple Hill enjoying the wonderful weather and the yummy treats.  We ran our first 20 mile training run for CIM.  I celebrated my birthday with my husband and had a great day!  At the end of the month I ran the Lake Natoma Four Bridges Half Marathon and limped to the finish.  We also broke our no-eating-out-streak after 62 days!

I continued to read, a lot.  I finished Run Like a Mother:  How to Get Moving – and Not Lose Your Family, Job or Sanity by Sarah Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell as well as Its Not About the Bike:  My Journey Back to Life by Lance Armstrong & Sally Jenkins {I loved this book and often found tears running down my face while I was reading it}.  I’m still working on The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin {I really have no idea what is taking me so long to finish this book; I really enjoy it but I only read it occasionally} and I started re-reading Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer {for the 4th time; I’m anxious for the movie release in November}.  I also started reading ChiRunning:  A Revolutionary Approach to Effortless, Injury-Free Running by Danny Dreyer and Katherine Dreyer {recommended by my sports doc}.  I totally slacked off with household chores this month and didn’t work on any home projects or craft projects.  Fail.
